Head and Heart Battle

“Fine art is that in which the head, the heart, and the hand of man go together.”

— John Ruskin

It might seem like a strange place to start, but I’ll say it anyway: in art, there are battles.

Art has been used in battle—literally—for propaganda and misdirection. It has also sparked conflict when used mischievously or subversively, especially when it offends. And yet, despite all that, art is often remembered as fun, inspiring, and full of life. Thankfully, I’m not talking about propaganda or the misuse of art here.

I’m talking about the battle within. The inner conflict that happens every time you start a new creative project. You may even feel it in the tone of this chapter—because I feel it too, even while writing about the thing I love. I’ve faced it countless times: the hesitations, the false starts, the struggle to begin.

I call them filters—like lenses you look through. They help you see things in a new way. Sometimes, I think of filters like onion skins: peel one away and you get closer to the core. Some filters are juicier than others, and you might find yourself coming back to them. But once you’ve worked through a filter, you’ll become more aware—and more likely to succeed in that area. By learning the filter; you leave behind the misunderstanding and gain a little truth.

For me, the battle is often won the moment I pick up a brush. But that’s because my Battles are different to yours. At that point, it’s only a matter of time before I’m crossing the finish line, and generallyproud of what I’ve created. I love sharing my work—not out of ego, but because so many people never get past the first hurdle starting and they never finishing. And I want you to experience that joy too: the satisfaction of seeing something through from start to finish.

The ability to complete a project is one of an artist’s greatest skills. So let’s start with the end in mind: What do you want to do? Where will your inspiration come from?

The Battle Begins Getting started can be fun—but for many, it’s also anxiety-inducing. Art brings its own versions of fear, self-doubt, and emotional resistance. It can be full of traps. You’ll need more than just heart and passion—you’ll need the head, the mind, the skill.

But why is that? Why is it so hard to begin?

It’s because creativity is deeply emotional. Your head might say, “I can’t do this.” Your heart shouts, “Just get stuck in!” And caught between the two is your project—waiting to be born.

What often gets lost is this: the real joy comes in the process. The doing. The trying. The progress. You don’t need a masterpiece. You don’t need a gallery or a frame. You just need to start, make something, and enjoy what you’ve made. Look back at it and say: I did that. I gave it a go. I learned something and I completed it.

So that’s where we begin—right here, right now. Reflecting on the battle between head and heart, and making your first few steps easier. These conflicts won’t disappear, but you’ll learn to recognise them—and move past them.

Art is a Birthright Art and creativity aren’t just about making pretty pictures. They are a birthright. That’s a bold statement, but it’s true. Creativity and imagination have been part of us since birth. We use them in everything—from cooking and accounting to the games we played as children.

As Picasso said, “All children are artists.”

That quote carries weight. If one of the most celebrated artists of all time said it, there must be something to it truth in it. Children may not yet know their passions, but they learn through creative play every day—whether they realise it or not.
